5 Hours
This project was centred around spending five hours in one location in Bristol documenting everything around me, from the sounds, smells and shapes, to the numbers of cars, pedestrians and objects of litter. One of the most prominent features of this area to me was the negative space above the buildings, created by overlapping lines formed from walls and roofs. I also recorded overheard conversation to attribute my area to the users of the space. Once back in the studio, I decided to set some of this overheard conversation along the lines of the space that I had recorded in my sketchbook in a letterpress piece. This proved a significant challenge as setting the type along diagonal lines needed a lot of careful packing out to make it solid. However, the process, although time consuming, was really rewarding, and I feel reflects the space well.
